"University on wheels" is a phrase that is used by one of America's top business speakers - Brian Tracy.
He is referring to the “education” we can get just by listening to professional audio books while driving to and from work or school each morning.
Many people "waste" as many as 2 or more hours each day commuting to work. During this time they do nothing. Some people listen to the radio, others just entertain themselves with their own thoughts. But there is so much more that can be done during this “wasted” time.
Here is a great, yet frightening fact -
Did you know that listening to a good professional audio book each day as you commute to work would allow you to gain the equivalent to a full university education within some years?!
Now this may not sound quite right to you when you first hear it but let me explain it to you this way.
Many university degree programs require that students spend no more than 10 hours per week attending their lectures, then after several years they are given their degrees.
And what are they doing during these 10 hours each week?
That is right… They are listening to their lecturers!!!
You can gain the same sort of information just by listening to the right audio books on the subject that you want to learn about.
Of course, this is not going to be the exact equivalent of a university degree as there is a bit more to gaining a degree than listening to the information, so unfortunately no university will give you a certificate after you have finished listening to your audio books, but you will have gained a large amount of new knowledge without having to put special time aside to do the required reading and if it is a topic that you are really interested in then you are more likely enjoy listening to the information and therefore more likely to retain more of it.
Now, there are certain professional audio book programs that WILL let you sit examinations after listening to their training books and then you will be able to get a certificate for passing the course.
There are many certificates that can be gained this way that are a credible source of proof of your expertise in a certain area.
So, why would you continue to "waste" valuable time on your daily commute to work when you can gain so much by using those hours to learn a new skill, a new business idea or a new profession?
If this makes sense to you, ask yourself what new skill you would love to learn or what subject you would love to know more about. When you have found your niche, get onto the internet and search for an audio book series on that topic.
You are sure to find plenty of information on the Internet related to your subject so you can start going to your very own "University on Wheels”
Audio books are available in both CD, cassette and downloadable formats such as mp3 so that you have the opportunity to listen to the book in a way that suits you best.
So, even if you do not drive to work you can listen on the bus using your CD player or mp3 player and this means that you do not have to restrict your listening to the time spent going to and from work. You can continue your “education” while walking the dog or doing the housework etc… There is plenty of time that can be made more useful by listening to an audio book.
So what are you waiting for?? Become an expert on your chosen topic today!!
